Carrie Clarke
MA Fine Art
Carrie Clarke’s sculptural practice is driven by investigating and manipulating materials. She works instinctively and spontaneously until she finds an emotional connection, forming a dialogue with the material and allowing it to inform the work as part of the process. Her use of industrial materials such as polystyrene and builder’s plaster, along with more traditional ones such as clay and ‘daub’ (clay, lime, sand, straw and dung), reflects her interest in how we use and respond to modern, man-made materials as well as natural, ancient ones.
She is concerned with material embodiment of ancient knowledge and cultural imprint and how this has influence based on the materials we choose to have around us. Throughout her masters degree she has explored how large-scale work informs our spatial awareness through bodily experience and her current work has architectural and archaeological influences as a way of contemplating past, present and future.
