Dan Atkinson

MA Communication Design

As someone who would like to promote film and filmmakers through illustration, this project has been very special to me. I have been working with independent filmmakers from the East Anglia region to create a (hypothetical) indie film festival called ‘INDIE ANGLIA’. The main deliverable for this has been a promotional newspaper for the event.

Digital double page newspaper spread by Dan Atkinson. Work features a close up illustration of a female vampire on the left, and text to the right. Colour palette is red and black.

This has then involved interviewing the filmmakers, and then having the privilege of working with their stills to create illustrated promotional assets for their films. It is not pictured in these examples, but the publication was printed to broadsheet size. One of the main themes for this project was ‘Analogue Nostalgia’, meaning that all the deliverables for the project were to be physical, and that there wouldn’t be an online presence for the festival. The aim of the project was to assess whether illustrated promotional media could exist in a digital world.

Orange double page spread. Text features on the left, illustration of a man in distress on the right.
Digital double page spread featuring illustration of person smiling on the right, with interview title on left hand page
Interview with filmmaker Hilary El-Msury, text features in the top half of the page, illustrations pink and blue on the bottom
