Freya Parfitt

MA Fine Art

Freya Parfitt is a sound-focused artist based in Norwich. Sound practices, within Freya’s works, situate sound as the subject first and foremost, prior to negotiating medium(s). These works are concerned with ambient sounds, the general din and underlying hum of the everyday, and how experiential value might be added to those through re-contextualising and foregrounding them.

Seeking to create a dialogue between sound and visual, household sounds are deconstructed and re-imagined as shapes and lines, taking a new form and context as graphic scores. Once drawn, these graphic scores are then offered up to musicians and participants to re-interpret back into sound without revealing their origin.

This act of translation across mediums utilises meditative listening practices and playful collaborative exchanges, placing new value on sonic surroundings by giving them shape, tone, and rhythm.
