I am a photographer interested in exploring the relationship between sexuality and the Catholic faith. Specifically, I want to investigate the shame that the teachings of the church have created for women. I grew up in a lapsed Irish catholic family on my Mum’s side. By the time I was born, no one in my extended family practised the faith, however, there has always been a sense of Catholic guilt and shame, especially during conversations revolving around sex and womanhood. I find it interesting how ingrained this sense of shame becomes even after leaving the church which is why I explore it in my work. I will have done my job if I create art which resonates with other young women struggling with this guilt because sex should not be as taboo in the 21st century and church teachings do not align with the values of the modern woman. Although I have chosen photography as my medium, it is not the defining aspect of my work. Rather, it is the tool I use to convey my message to the viewer.
