Melanie Geary
BA Fine Art
Melanie Geary explores the transient nature of memory through the personification of botany. Her work explores dreaming as escapism and the relationship between the subconscious and conscious mind. The fleetingness of her work reflects the action of dwelling and draws on feelings of alienation and loneliness of growing up and leaving home – navigating the world as someone who experiences emotions intensely and feels like a spectator to her surroundings.
The fragmentary nature of her prints and paintings is representative of dissociative behavioural patterns and mood swings – drawing upon nature as a means of grounding herself and relating to exterior environments. Using paint and print to create a ‘dreamscape’ that entwines imagination with fact, her work draws on the inconsistency in remembering, incorporating visuals from organic forms and flora as a means of abstracting the known.
