Melissa Seavers
BA Textile Design
Melissa is a textile designer, specialising in weaving. Her collection Memories from the Moors explores heritage and historic memories from the North York Moors. It celebrates three areas of historic significance: the landscape & plant life, the historic ruined abbeys and the abandoned mines & railway. Her fascination with memory and sense of place underpins her work, whilst her close connection to the moors has created a deeper understanding of this historic area.
Faded memories and forgotten history are woven back together in a retelling of the past, drawing on different visual elements from each area of heritage, using a colour palette inspired by the rich environment. To further emphasise this narrative, she has combined her weaving alongside print and embellishment to add visual details. Her interest in storytelling through textiles has been a driving force of the project, integrating her own photography of the area within her woven designs.
