Sunny Petch
BA Illustration
Whilst I have been making sequential illustrations sporadically for years, it was the creation of my first stand-alone comic ‘A Gut Feeling’ (created in my second year of university) that awakened my passion, inspiring me to pursue this as a career.
Research, historical art, literary references and mythology all define my practice. Admiring books such as ‘The Mercies’ by Kiran Millwood Hargrave and ‘Outlawed’ by Anna North, I love narratives that carefully weave history with fiction to create compelling, intimate stories that acknowledge the complicated time period they take place within. My enjoyment of research and my skills in sequential illustration make for a distinct visual style.
As a creative, my goal is to tell queer stories that dig deeper than just ‘coming out’; ones that explore the inherent grief and joys that come with being different, interweaving these narratives into exciting plots that leave room for creativity from not just myself, but from the readers too.
